5 Lake Tahoe Places That Are Better in Fall

September 23, 2022 by lgranger

It’s time to slow things down and that’s exactly what fall means at Lake Tahoe. While most of us enjoy Tahoe year-round with its diverse selection of outdoor sports and entertainment options, most don’t realize that the fall season is a peaceful time to visit. See for yourself with these 5 places to explore this autumn.

1. Famous Fall Colors – Hope Valley (South Lake Tahoe) is famous for the best fall colors. At 7,000 feet on the eastern side of Carson Pass, displays views of the meandering West Carson River to its guardian peaks. It also offers day hiking, fishing, and camping options. Click HERE for more information.

2. Kokanee Salmon Spawning – After the first big rains in South Lake Tahoe, more than 20,000 Kokanee Salmon can be found at Taylor Creek where they return annually to mate, spawn and complete their life cycle. The Salmon are typically there between October through December. In addition, the Taylor Creek Visitor Center with its nature exhibits is a good place for children. Click HERE for more information.

3. All Levels of Hiking and Biking – Spooner Summit Area (East Lake Tahoe) is a great meeting spot. Visitors can take an easy stroll on the Spooner Lake Trail or an all-day trek on the Tahoe Rim Trail. If you want to switch it up, the Flume Trail offers great mountain biking with splendid Lake Tahoe views. Click HERE more information.

4. A Waterfall, Summit of 10,776 Feet, and Views – Mount Rose Highway Summit (North Lake Tahoe) is open year-round. Witness leaves turning a little early which brings a golden wrapped meadow around the Mount Rose Highway Summit. Enter the trailhead to Mount Rose Summit, a ~10.6-mile hike roundtrip with views of Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City at the top. A special treat includes a waterfall from the Galena Creek at the ~2.65-mile mark, which is a good turnaround point for those not continuing to the summit. Click HERE more information.

5. Cruise on the Lake – Be on the Lake Tahoe itself and select options like a South East Shore starting point with a 2.25-hour scenic daytime cruise on the MS Dixie II from the Zephyr Cove Resort to Emerald Bay. For North Shore cruising enjoy a sunset dinner provided by North Tahoe Cruises – The Tahoe Gal. Then for South Shore cruising from the Lake Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club, Tahoe Bleu Wave provides public, private and event cruises.
